Subject: [*] [ANN] Major Update to Fuffy Released

[Winchester, England - Friday, 14th April 2000]

Fuffy 2.0 - More Fun and Easier to Play than Ever

Fuffy.com today announced the release of a major update to the
multiplayer game Fuffy, a US$15 shareware dice game similar to
yahtzee, yatzee or yacht.

Version 2.0 of Fuffy improves the user and gaming experience by
providing 68K machine compatibility, adds an undo function to correct
wrong scoring entries, and provides more robust handling of keyboard
shortcuts. Various interface enhancements are also implemented,
including "Roll Lights" to visually indicate the progress of a game.

In addition, the multiplayer game has been enhanced by the
implementation of a score sheet, which allows players to compare
their scores against each other. Various options, some of which are
new in this version, allow smoother and faster play on older
Macintoshes.

"The new features in this new version make Fuffy more easy and fun to
play than ever. More players will be able to enjoy Fuffy as version
2.0 is now playable on both 68K as well as PowerPC Macintoshes", said
C-Y Khoo, the author of Fuffy.

Existing features of Fuffy include a customisable interface, a
versatile hints function, a resettable high score list and full
balloon help.

Fuffy has already received numerous positive reviews, including a
Four Cow rating on tucows.com. The game has been played to death by a
team of Human Interface experts, which has given its approval to
Fuffy's interface (really!).

Subject: [*] Abstract for CodePerfect 2.0 (uploaded to info-mac.org)

CodePerfect (formerly known as CodeWizard) is a powerful, easy-to-use
tool, which converts and lists many types of codes needed in
programming, web design and other forms of use of the Mac OS
computing environment. While CodePerfect uses advanced conversion
routines, the use of the program is very simple. All you need to do
to convert a value to another is to click on the right conversion tab
and you're ready to go. You can also combine the value searches by
using MultiSearch. CodePerfect also converts text files from Mac
format to Windows and vise versa

The user interface (UI) in CodePerfect is very self-explanatory.
Application consist of only one window, where all functions are
performed. The needed feature is chosen from 7 tabs. The last tab
(MultiSearch) combines all CodePerfect's conversion methods in one
function, but it's easier to use specific methods if you need only
one type of conversion, because then you can build a list of several
conversions (for example Hex code to character).

This data is a file which adds to the game 'HoverSpeeder' and
enable to play BGMs using a sampling sound.

Using this data needs HoverSpeeder application.

HoverSpeeder do the BGM performance by QuickTime. By changing
to this sampling sound data, music quality becomes good(STEREO),
even the speed of a game improves. To use sampling sound data,
you copy(or move) BGM_AIFF file into 'datas' folder which is
included in HoverSpeeder folder. After this operation, restart

BOOM 1.2.1

What's BOOM?
BOOM is an arcade game in the grand tradition, bringing the
playability and feel of the glorious 8-bit consoles on the Macintosh.
It can be described as "Bomberman meets Doom". Actually, I took the
basic Bomberman idea and dropped it in a "Super-Deformed Doom"
scenario (whatever this means).
If you don't know what Bombermanü and Doomü are, definitely you've
never played a computer game. This is the right time to start.

BOOM's main features are:
* Smooth sprite based animations in 256 colors
* 8 different soundtracks and multi-channel sound effects
* Simultaneous two players action
* 80 different levels
* 10 different enemy characters varying in intelligence and weaponry
* Mid-game monsters and a final Super Boss

System Requirements
PowerPC processor;
5.5 MBytes free memory;

Sound Manager 3.0 or later.

Recommended Configuration
Mac OS 8.1 or later;
Sound Manager 3.2 or later;
InputSprocket 1.1 or later.

What's new in BOOM 1.2.1

     * Fixed a bug that caused negative score values to be displayed
in some cases when surpassing one million of points.
     * Fixed a bug in the display resolution switching routines that
caused the monitor's refresh rate to be uncorrectly set in some cases.
     * Now, when switching the monitor size to 640x480, the best
available refresh rate is always set (normally 75Hz).
     * Changed the text in the alert displayed when it is not possible
to change the main monitor's resolution to 640x480.
     * Improved player manoeuvrability when using joysticks or other
fully rotational controllers via InputSprocket.

Background
You're a drug dealer on the streets of New York. You have 30 days to make as much money as possible in 6 different cities. It takes you one day to move from each city to the next. You start out in debt to Louie the Fish (the Loan Shark). You're first goal would be to repay your debt so it doesn't get out of hand (as it increases by 15% each day). If you never repay it, Louie will take it from your final cash when you are done with your 30 days, which could mean you'd be in the hole by a few bucks depending on how you did.

Subject: [*] HAX1R2.HQX - A scenario for Realmz

Welcome to Hax, a scenario for Realmz! ¨1999,2000 John Rawlins

Hax is a new role playing adventure scenario for the popular Macintosh
shareware game Realmz. You have come to the Madwood in search of the
elusive town of Hax. It is said the town is overflowing with precious gems
that impart tremendous powers. Many a brave soul has sought to open a trade
route to Hax. Will you dare find success, where they found naught but an
unmarked grave?

Hax 1.2 has been built to run with Realmz version 7.0.9. You may have
differing degrees of success if you run it on a different version.

System requirements for Hax are exactly the same as Realmz system
requirements, to wit:
Realmz requires a Macintosh capable of at least 256 Colors, 5 Meg free RAM
minimum and a display capable of 640 x 480 resolution or better. It does
NOT work with the old Apple 12" monitors or some laptop monitors that have
a display resolution less than 640 x 480 in size.
You will also need 800K of hard disk space for temporary files during game
play. This space will be returned to you when you quit Realmz. If you
encounter an error during the start of a new game, check to make sure you
have at least 800K of hard disk space free. Each saved game will also
require from 300 - 800K of hard drive space depending on the size of the
scenario.

Hax costs $10 to register. You can play about half the game for free, then
you need to register if you want to continue.

Hax can only be played on registered copies of Realmz.

PS - It's fine to include Hax on the Info-Mac CD-ROMs.

it's possible to search for files or folders located on Hotline servers
without the need for a web based file search engine. This not only makes
the file search more reliable it also guaranties your privacy.

Changes in version 1.2.3:

Ç Added an extra (optional) column with the server addresses.
Ç Hotfind now asks which client it should use to connect to a server when
more then one client is running
Ç Opening a saved server list is now up to 4 times faster
Ç Passwords are now automatically saved and reload after a refresh
Ç Added generic Hotline clone support
Ç ...and many other tweaks and bug fixes

Changes in version 1.2.3a1:

HTML OptimizerPro 1.5.1

What it is: Tool for checking and optimizing your web pages
Author: Ton Brand
Company: Ton's Software
License: shareware
Computer: PowerPC
MacOS: 7.5 or later
Abstract:
HTML OptimizerPro's main function is to save space on your web pages by
removing unnecessary characters and tags, making parsing the page by a
browser more efficient.
Four other useful functions of HTML OptimizerPro are:
(1) Checking the so called tagged pairs, i.e. the tags that always have to
appear together with their end tags. Further, IMG tags are checked for WIDTH,
HEIGHT and ALT attributes. ALT attributes can be added if missing, with or
without string.
(2) Checking the validity of the internal links.
(3) Marking dangling tags and missing attributes to find them quickly.
(4) Converting special characters to the &....; notation.
HTML OptimizerPro optimizes very fast: a few seconds for an average file.
New in version 1.5 is that you can check or optimize an entire web folder,
including nested folders, at one pass. Version 1.5.1 is a bug fix.
HTML OptimizerPro is a PPC application and requires Mac OS 7.5 or later.

(Only very vague answers, hope it helps anyway)

DAL -- Apple's Data Access Language -- is (I believe) a superset of
standard SQL. The extension was part of the standard System 7
distribution from 7.0 up to ?some later release?. My impression was that
it was thereafter included in the System file, but perhaps that's wrong.
Anyway, just get hold of a System 7.x installer.

I also seem to remember Apple handing it over to someone else at some
point. Current development: might be Digital, Odesta, 4D/ACI or some
other company.

Does anyone know of programs that will ensure that GIFs use web-safe
colors? What I'd really like is a droplet that will correct them if a
non-safe color is found.

Subject: DSL Connection for two computers

I recently had a DSL installed. The vendor I used has a standard
installation: They run some sort of filter or splitter off the phone
line, connect a DSL modem to it, and then run an ethernet cable
(10BaseT) from the DSL modem to the Ethernet port on your computer.

However, it's a snap to connect multiple computers. All you have to
do (assuming the setup is similar) is to connect the DSL modem to an
Ethernet concentrator with a crossover cable, then connect as many
computers as you want to the concentrator using regular 10BaseT
cables. I actually wound up with the DSL modem in my attic, where my
concentrator is!

Just remember to have a crossover cable ready. My DSL modem came with
a packing slip indicating a crossover cable was supposed to be in it,
but there wasn't any. Crossover cables are readily available at
electronics stores, even including Radio Shack, although I just made
one myself.

Subject: iBook built-in keyboard

Hello Happy Macintosh Users ^_^

A few years ago, while staying in Japan, I bought a PowerBook 520C coming
with a built-in JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) keyboard, which is very
convenient to me, whenever I need to input Japanese in any "stand-alone"
situation, for instance while working in a train or a plane, or just in the
countryside...

Now, I am planning to buy a brand new iBook within a few days.
Unfortunately, all iBooks sold in France where I live now are equipped with
a French AZERTY keyboard. I already asked the staff at some retail shops,
but nobody seems much concerned about my problem.

My question is twofold:

1/ Until now, it has been cumbersome for me, even almost impossible, to
input Japanese through Romaji with a French keyboard, as the different
input methods (kotoeri, ATOK, EGBridge) are expecting either a JIS or US
keyboard. But I am still under System 7.5.5... Do you know if the input
methods (or the system) have been updated to work correctly with "exotic"
keyboards in Mac OS 9 (which is multilingual by default, AFAIK )?

2/ If not, do you know where from I can order/buy a US or JIS (whichever)
*built-in* keyboard to *replace* the French one. From a hardware point of
view, it seems pretty easy to change it on an iBook, compared to the highly
compact PowerBook. Please note that the solution of plugging-in an extra
USB keyboard wouldn't be ok for me. I really need to be able to input
Japanese when I'm "on the road"... ;-)

Thanks in advance for any advice,

	--Michel

Subject: Zip drives

I know this is a Mac listserv but I am being forced to replace my Macintosh
lab at my school with a PC lab. I have quite a few external Zips for the
machines. Is there a way they could be used with the PC laptops teachers on
my staff will be getting next year?
Thanks for your help.
Sandy
