Password Please =81 is a simple program that asks for a password at startup.
It offers a limited form of security for the Macintosh user. It's only
function is to provide two different users their own passwords on a single
computer. It's free, it's simple, and it's self-explanatory. It was

WhereDidAllMyMoneyGo? is a personal finance manager. It is the natural
choice for people who frequently work with foreign currencies.
Its multi-currency capabilities make it an excellent choice for tracking
international stock portfolios. The total value of your portfolio in your
own currency is constantly updated as you enter new shareprices or currency
rates - WhereDidAllMyMoneyGo? happily adds SONY quoted in YEN to AAPL quoted
in dollar and gives you the result in your own currency.
But unlike other stock trackers, WhereDidAllMyMoneyGo? is capable of
tracking all your earnings, posessions and expenses as well. Telling you how
much you spend on your car last year is as natural for WhereDidAllMyMoneyGo?
as telling you how much you won because of last years rise of the dollar.

WhereDidAllMyMoneyGo? is capable of handling an unlimited number of accounts
(registers), expense types (codes like 'Insurance', 'medical', 'rent') and
transactions. A trial version (PPC and 68k) - limited to 100 transactions -
and a user guide can be freely downloaded from

users.pandora.be/bert.torfs

WhereDidAllMyMoneyGo? costs 25 dollars, requires only 1.8 Mb of memory and 2
Mb of disk space. It is free to registered users of BelgoFisc.

> Any recommendations for buying a new harddrive?
My recommendation would be an aftermarket brand, with a 5 year
warranty. Go for the highest speed you can afford. Not sure of the
8600 configuration, how many scsi devices can you mount internally. I
would go internal if you have an open bay, it is definitely cheaper.
If you do not have an internal bay open, you will need an external
drive. You can install the newer, faster drive internally and put the
old drive in the case as an external drive. The big problem with the
exchange is installing the jumpers for scsi id and termination.

Try www.chipmerchant.com. They have configuration information and all
of their memory is lifetime guaranteed. Prices are usually among the
best.

Subject: (Q) Wall Street's 2nd battery?

Dear Digest readers,
On a couple occasions I accidently hit the flap of my Powerbook's
battery when it was asleep. Both occasions I would put the battery
back in and be able resume my work from where I started without
rebooting. This happened while it wasn't even plugged in! So the
question is, does the Wall Street have a second battery that gives it
this ability, and is it one that needs replacing after a certain
period of time?

Also how much time do I have to put back in the battery before I have
to reboot? Sometimes I wouldn't notice the battery was out, and
then I would have to reboot the next time I put the battery in.

Thank you.

could use Creator Changer to check and correct (Use the make like

Another possibility, you may need to do a desktop rebuild, similar symptoms.

You might consider a couple of things:

1) Excel Spreadsheet with a dialog box
2) AppleWorks/ClarisWorks DB. You can design the interface to be very
pretty point & click. Clearly the DB would be fairly simple, various
conversion routines. All of that would be hidden to the user.

I want to add an ethernet PC card to my PowerBook 1400. I have an almost

its PC only so there is no Mac driver for this card. I was wondering if there
was a generic driver available for PCMCIA type ethernet cards, or if someone
created one for this card. Its called a "Combo PCMCIA Ethernet card" from
LinkSys.

They have no desire to write a Mac driver for this card and apparently that is
the only thing stopping my PowerBook from using the card. I get an error

card icon mounts and the name for the card shows up under the icon.

I guess I'll have to break down and buy one. Anybody know of a cheap, reliable
model?

One of the most complete solutions is Apple's Macintosh Programmer's

its system software components and they're free.

Go to <http://developer.apple.com/tools/mpw-tools/index.html> and you'll be

While MPW isn't as nice as CodeWarrior, it is free and highly customizable.

I was delighted to see that Aladdin came out with v5.1 of DropStuff. I
fear I was less than delighted to see at the Aladdin web site that the
utility cost a few bucks, even for those of us who bought SITD5.

We certainly weren't mentioned.

I got annoyed enough, and curious enough, this evening to download DS51
this evening. Yee haw! The naughtywording thing did not ask for a regno
or a shareware fee. It knew my SITD5 identification number.

Now why couldn't Aladdin have told us that?

Subject: Greyscale adaptor for an SE-30?

Greetings Digest Readers from Saudi Arabia!

I have just rescued an SE-30. It had been functioning until very recently
(with System 6, 80MB Hard drive, and 8MB Ram) as a server, but as the
flyback transformer was faulty the old machine had been considered
worthless, and had been replaced by a PC - I wonder if that will give nine
years of faultless performance?

Now repaired, and with a cleaned case, 32MB Ram, a 1GB Hard Drive, and OS
7.5.5, the SE-30 occupies an honored place as a fax server - but the old
machine only displays in black and white.

The March 97 MacAddict had an article which mentioned that a company called
Xceed (still in business?) used to produce an adaptor for the 030 Direct
Slot which would allow an SE-30 to display 256 greys on the nine inch
internal display. (I don't wish to hook up an external monitor.)

I would be most grateful if anyone could either sell me one or point me in
the direction of a source.

(Replies to my email address please.)

Michael Camp

OE appears to strip out the settext markers. The only way I can get it to
work is process the text and put the set text markers back in. I have a One

would be easy to have Tex-Edit record an Apple Script that does it. You have
to search for

and replace it with

Subject: Launcher background color?

Hey y'all! Setting the Launcher up to use panels by using subfolders is an
old trick. Just put a bullet (option-8) as the first character of a folder
name, and put it in Launcher Items; it becomes a panel. But does anyone
know how to change the Launcher's background color? I am talking about the
color in between the buttons. My Launcher is teal in the Applications panel
and a light tangerine in the Utilities panel. Either color clashes horribly
with my desktop pattern. I seem to remember a secret way to set control
panel backgrounds, from the early days of 7.5, but I've no idea how it's
done. I'm not afraid of ResEdit if that's what it takes.

Thanks in advance,

All the mail, news addreses etc. files are situated in your user file in
Netscape preferences. juste copy your old user file in the Netscape

All data files associated with Netscape (2.0, 3.0 and 4.0) are stored in
the preferences folder in the system folder. Netscape has its own folder
under preferences in there you will find:

mail files
bookmark list
history list
list of subscribed newsgroups
the cache of temporary Internet files (.htm, .gif, .jpg, etc.)
the magic cookie

If you usse the user profiles system under Netscape 4.0 you will see
multiple files one for each user.

Subject: OS RAM utilization and VM?

While I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable about
all things Macintosh, I have recently come across an
oddity that really has me scratching my head...

I am running OS 8.5.1 on my Powerbook 5300cs and
recently upgraded my RAM to 56meg. When running
1meg of VM (which is the default I believe) the "About
this Macintosh" window indicates that my system uses
12.2meg. When I turn off VM this figure jumps to over
20meg. It just doesn't seem to add up to me.

Can anybody tell me why this is so?

Thanks,

Somebody just sent this hint. If you just go into Speed Doubler's command
key menu and uncheck the boxes there, you lose the ability to use command
keys with SD (unimportant for my purposes), and the underlining goes away.
A lot cheaper than buying Retrospect.

I don't think this has anything to do with OS 8.5.1, Paul. The
underlined initials of menu labels are a feature of Speed Doubler 8 from
Connectix. Take a look in your Control Panels folder and I bet you'll
find it. Switch to the Keyboard Power tab on the palette to see what
modifier keys were selected to trigger the menu pulldown and menu item
selection shortcuts. Different strokes for different folks, of course,
but I find keyboard-powered menu navigation to be a terrific timesaver.

If you have Connectix' Spped Doubler installed, check the Hot Key dialogue.
It has a feature of underlining. Obscure, but there.

Subject: Video problems w/NewerTech G3 upgrade cards

Since upgrading my 7300 with a NewerTech MaxPowr G3 card, my screen image
has been rather flaky. For instance, dragging and dropping a colour
swatch in Aldus Freehand leaves a trail of colour across the screen.
Switching applications sometimes leaves on the screen a white shadow of
the app. window that was formerly at the front . Newer's web site
acknowledges that this is a problem, and offers two solutions:
A) replace 70 ns video RAM with faster 60 ns.
If that doesn't work, try
B) a new video card.
Has anybody tried (A) on a 7300? Did it work? I don't want to have to buy
a new video card if I can just get away with upgrading video RAM.
