Subject: (Q) Can I connect my Studio Display 21 to the Cube?

I have been seduced by the ads for the new cube, but they stress that the
cube has an entirely new connection for the monitor, and so Apple has three
new monitors out to go with the cube. However, I am very happy with my
Apple Studio Display 21 and would like to keep using it. Can I connect this
monitor to the cube, and if so, how do I do that? (I am asking here rather
than just buying the cube and seeing if I can do it!) Thanks.

Subject: [*] Mac-FTP-list, Version 4.5.9

The Mac-FTP-list lists over 120 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes),
over 100 Mac web pages, and contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs decompress
and decode which files. Also there is a section on how to use certain files.

This Stuffit Deluxe 5.0 archive contains both the text and html versions of
the Mac-FTP-list.

To ensure that the columns in the Format Chart section line up correctly the
document's text must be in a monospaced font such as Courier 10pt, Monaco 9pt,
or a PC equivalent.

Permission is given for this program to be included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM.

You can also have PandoCalendar automatically plot the days you work.
Great for people who don't have a Monday-Friday work schedule!

5.2 or more by now. It might even be available on info-mac.

I am missing something, probabally obvious, but needless to say, it is a pain in the rear.

We had several Macs that had automatic login set for various servers on reboot (against advise, but that's another story). Now the server went down, and was replaced. Now the machines hang up when starting up because it is looking for servers that don't exist.

Where is the preferences that store this information, so that I can trash it and start over? I have deleted the AppleShare Prep and the AppleTalk Preferences, but to no avail. Any help (including other suggestions to rid of this problem) would be greatly appreciated. Please email directly (to time consideration), and I will post a summary shortly.

TIA....

There should be a USB extension named "USB Mass Storage Support" and
another named "USB Mass Storage Extension"--although all of a sudden I
can't them on my iMac...? Anyway, Apple did something to automatically
enable startup via USB. I discovered this when all of a sudden, after
a system update to 9.0.4, my iMac started up from a SCSI drive
connected via a Microtech USB connector! Wow!

They may have been rolled into some other USB update, since I can no
longer find them...? Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Subject: Replacement for iMac internal modem?

Having stupidly suffered my third lightning blast to a modem in three years
of summers in the Blue Ridge, this time to the internal 56K Apple modem
originally in my Revision A iMac, I found myself resorting to the USB 56K
external Global Village Teleport modem, only to discover that its normal
best data transfer speed with OS 9.0.4 is 1.9K; the only info I've gotten
from Global Village support is that they've been working on a new driver.
But I'm increasingly disgusted; if I'd wanted a 14.4 modem I would have
bought one.

So now I'm wondering if it's possible to get a replacement for the original
internal 56K modem for my iMac or if there's any current internal 56K modem
that is compatible with it. My impression is that Global Village's own
internal 56K and USR's is compatible only with the G4 models.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Thanks for iMac pre-purchase advice

A hearty thanks for all who replied to my request for advice on
purchasing one of the new iMacs. The consensus seems to be that my
original chosen configuration seems to be the best for my needs.

Also, everyone pretty much agreed that the optimum amount of RAM for an
iMac is between 94 and 128 MB. Regarding my requests about SoundJam,
some folks reported nominal issues when ripping CDs and running apps in
the background. Otherwise, SoundJam seems pretty stable.

As for some sort of greeting card/newsletter program, many people
recommended PrintShop, but the Mattel website (which now owns
Broderbund) doesn't show a Mac-compatible version currently shipping.
Photoshop, Quark and PageMaker were also mentioned, but these seem to
complicated for my wife's needs. So, it seems we're going to have to
cludge it out using AppleWorks.

Thanks to all who responded to my request.

Regards,

File Buddy does this very well. It allows you to show/hide files, as
well as change creator, etc.

Please note that even though a file is invisible, it will still be
accessible to anyone, looking for it.

If you are looking to use the visible/invisible feature for security
reasons, I have found a much better way, although it only makes
sense, when you can reformat your drive.

In the process of reformatting and partitioning your drive, create an
approriately sized partion for sensitive date - let's say 100-200MB.
Then, deselect the *automount* feature for that partition in Apple's
Hard Drive Setup.
Now, whenever you boot up, that partition will be entirely invisible.
Even disk repair utilities or FileBuddy will not see it, Sherlock
will not index it, since it isn't mounted.

When you need access to those files, open HDSet-up and select "mount
volumes". This brings up the invisible partition until you restart,
at which time, well, you get the drift.

I find this particularly good for PowerBooks, since I hate password
protections, which can play havock with your drive, in case there is
a problem.

ResEdit (free from Apple and probably InfoMac), Norton Fast Find and
Norton Disk Editor (the former comes with all Norton Disk Doctor, the
latter came with most but not all), and FileBuddy, a shareware app
you can find through VersionTracker.

There's also MIX, from Microimages

http://www.microimages.com/freestuf/mix/

Alternatively, if you have shell access to the host system (or a nice
sysadmin that'll install stuff for you) there's VNC, available from

http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

This has the added advantage that you can also get software that'll let
you remotely get at other Mac and/or windows systems, too. It's more of
a general purpose Timbuktu sort of thing.
