Subject: [*] Alpha Text Editor

This is version 7.1 of Alpha, a completely customizable and programmable
text editor especially tuned to handle source code, LaTeX, and HTML files.
Alpha is:

New features:
o new Latex, HTML, and Java modes
o expanded syntax coloring
o new modular reorganization of Tcl code
o One or two other enhancements and fixes.

And the standard blurb:

o Powerful. Alpha uses Dr. Ousterhout's Tool Command Language (Tcl) as a
scripting language. Tcl is rapidly becoming a popular extension language
  over many different hardware platforms.
o Customizable. Any function or keystroke sequence can be bound to any key,
menus are completely user-specified and modifiable.
o Emacs-ish. Alpha supports many of the key bindings and central concepts
of GNU Emacs. It is not a port, however, and uses a Tcl instead of LISP
  as an extension language.
o Multi-modal. Alpha supports mode-specific:
         bindings
         menus
         keyword colorizing
Alpha currently has over 20 different modes, including modes for the
following languages: Ada, C, C++, Fortran, HTML, Java, Pascal, Perl,
Postscript, Scheme, SQL, Tcl, and TeX (including both LaTeX and LaTeX2e).
o Interoperable. Alpha allows user scripts to build and send arbitrary
AppleEvents. Currently, the default configuration of Alpha inter-operates
with several different compilers, including CodeWarrior and Symantec C/C++,
several LaTeX implementations, including OzTeX, DirectTeX, and Textures
(although Textures' AppleEvent support is currently very weak), and several
other applications, such as MacPerl, BibTeX, Excalibur, the ToolServer, and
  Eudora.
o Native on the PowerMac.
o Uses the latest Apple technologies, such as Drag and Drop, and AEGizmos.
o Uses Ramon Felciano's Mercutio menu definition routines.
o Internet Config-aware.

Alpha is ShareWare, $30.

DragAnyWindow is a way cool control panel that enhances the
look and behavior of window dragging. When you drag a window's
title bar and Solid Dragging is active, the whole window image
is moved instead of a dull-looking window outline. If the Update
Windows option is also active, all windows are updated on the
fly without waiting for you to release the mouse. Not as fast as
the BeOS, but definitely better than the standard Mac OS
behavior!

DragAnyWindow also allows you to easily move any kind of
window, including dialogs, alerts, standard "Open" and "Save"
dialogs, game windows and other non-movable windows. It lets you
bring back to the desktop any window that has gone out of sight,
or center the front window on the main screen with a single
keystroke. These options are very useful for old applications
designed for the 9" screen (which often use fixed windows) and
for moving modal dialogs and windows behind them.

New in version 4.5:

- Updated for Mac OS 8.5.

Subject: [*] John's WP GREP 1.1.5

Adds regular expression (GREP) search capability to WordPerfect 3.5 and later.

The standard Find command lets you search for occurrences of the word
'apple' in your file. But sometimes, instead of searching for a specific
word or phrase, you'd benefit from searching for a certain _kind_ of word
or phrase. That kind could just be a list of, say, 'apple', 'orange',
'plum', 'pear'. Or it could be any word that starts with 'p' and has four
letters, or any word starting with 'p' and having four letters, the second
and fourth of which are within the first half of the alphabet.

In like manner, you can search for a telephone number from any country or
configuration followed by a word that starts with a vowel. If you can
conceive of the kind of text - the pattern that describes it - you can
search for it.

Free. May be included on AMUG, Info-Mac and Umich CDs.

Subject: [*] SwitchRes 1.5 - English version

SwitchRes is an extension that allows you to control the resolutions
of all your displays. A Control Panel is joined, which lets you change
its preferences, and a Control Strip Module and a Contextual Menu
extension are bundled. You can change all your resolutions with just
one mouse click on the Finder desktop, or just by pressing one key.

It also allows you to:
----------------------

* use *all* avaiable resolution of your video cards, not only those the
  MacOS choose for you
* automatically switch resolution and color depth of all monitors when
launching an application, and restore your settings when quitting
* position the desktop icons where you want, at every resolution change
  and at startup
* configure the menus by choosing which resolutions and what bitdepths
will be displayed (Control Strip Module menu, Contextual Menu)

and a lot of other features...

SwitchRes requires MacOS 8, and a multisync monitor may be useful...
Of course, SwitchRes works fine under MacOS 8.5
It is distributed as a $9 shareware, but you can try the application
for 7 days.

Bugs corrected and news in version 1.5:
---------------------------------------

* All SwitchRes menus are definable independently: you can decide to
show the depths only in the Control Strip Module and the resolutions
only in the Contextual Menu, if you want
* SwitchRes can restore the display and sound settings when an
  application quits
* You can prevent SwitchRes to re-apply an application defined setting
when you change the frontmost application.
* You can prevent an application to change the resolution. It's
specially
useful when a game is designed to work in a resolution that the
  programmer decided to use.
* More NuBus based Macs are supported, including PowerMacs
6100/7100/8100 AV
  and Powerbooks 520, 540 and 1400.

* The Appearance of the control panel has radically chaged: You can
resize
the Control Panel's window, and the lists are sortable by name, screen
  size, etc.
* The Control Panel is now more compatible with some Kaleidoscope

Subject: [*] VSE HTML Turbo 1.0 (68k) - Accelerate your web site

<smaller>VSE HTML Turbo 1.0 is a new tool that optimizes HTML documents so
that they become much smaller and load much quicker into Web browsers such
as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The optimization
does not change the way web browsers will display the document.

This is the fully functional demo version for Power Macintosh and iMac.

BENEFITS
By using VSE HTML Turbo, Web browsers will display Web pages as fast as
possible. Web surfers will receive Web pages quicker and text will be
displayed almost immediately after requesting a Web site.
The quicker a Web site loads, the better will be the visitors impression of
the site, the company and the product.

VSE HTML Turbo does more than just cutting off some bytes of HTML
documents. Because page retrievals take less time to complete, the average
number of simultaneous connections is reduced. That means that more
connection bandwidth is available to satisfy each individual page request.

In addition, if one has to pay for bandwidth, VSE HTML Turbo will pay for
itself.

POWERFUL FEATURES
- very easy to use: Drag and Drop is all there is to do!

- VSE HTML Turbo is safe to use because it only optimizes copies of the
original documents

- optimizes any HTML version

- optimizes JavaScript, Tcl and VBScript

- best suited for documents created by WYSIWYG HTML authoring tools

- multi-threaded optimization so you can drag and drop files again and again

- very customizable to specific needs

- shows file saving results just in time while optimizing the files

- creates a log file if needed

Subject: (Q) Saving files with Netscape 4.06

I was wondering if anyone knows why when I switched to Netscape 4.06 from
3, now when I save certain files, particularily doing 'Save As' to save a
webpage as simpletext, Netscape doesn't associate the file with the
assigned program, and give it an appropriate resource so I can just click
on it to open? they are always saved as Netscape files.

When the files or pages are saving, instead of saying "File will open with
SimpleText", it's blank.

I'm sure others are having this problem, Is Netscape getting sloppy with
their browsers now that Microsoft has kicked them in the groin?

To remove a hyperlink in Word 98:

1. Press the control key while selecting the hyperlink text. (You might
need to turn off (Mac) contextual menus in Word (at the bottom of the help

2. Select "Edit Hyperlink..." from the (Word) contextual menu.

3. Click on the "Remove Hyperlink" button.

(I'm not really an expert in Word, I just typed "How do I remove
Hyperlinks?" in the Assistant dialog box.)

Actually they work: but you have to modify their "modem script" by
adding "X3" at the end of the init string. Use a text editor like
BBEdit, so to not modify their peculiar Type and Creator.

the laptop system have 2(two) TCP dialing adaptor:

Subject: frequent crashes

Hello info-Mac readers,

I have a PowerComputing PowerCentre 150 running system 7.5.5 which has
recently began to crash, often with error 11 messages, like: "Sorry, a
system error occurred 'Visual client' error type 11". I think these crashes
started to happen after I accidently made an alias of my HD, which I
immediately trashed.
These crashes occur very often, the last one happened after I left off
writing this message: my screen saver came on but when I tried to activate
the screen again the crash occurred with the message above.
I have run Norton and TechToolPro 2.1.1 and got clean bills of health. I
have rebuilt my desktop and zapped my pram. The problem persists.
Has anyone any ideas and advice about how to solve this problem?

I am going to get an external HD. I have a zip drive attached to my scsi
port at the moment. Should I attach the HD to the computer and then the zip
to the HD, or the other way round? Does it matter?

I want to move to system 8.1 and then 8.5 when it arrives here (UK). I
daren't lose my internet connections. I plan to try out the new systems on
the external HD first to make sure everything works fine before making the
final move. Can anyone give advice on this, or foresee problems I might
experience?

Thanks,
> Ezra

PS Another crash occurred whilst I was running the Eudora spell checker on
this message with message: 'Sorry, a system error occurred "Eudora Spell
Checker" error type 11. It's driving me mad!

I should send my mp2100 out for repair, but would like some idea what

Galaxy Hardware's David suggested, after some discussion, that we
probably have isolated the problem to a connection of the serial port to
the motherboard, so off it must go to apple.
Also, as it stands, I can't backup before I send it back for repair and
will lose information, so this might be a high apple support issue.
