I have to disagree here, and disagree in public. Multiple utilities
view disk fragmentation and other hard drive issues from different
points of view. What may be a bad btree to one utility may be a
perfectly solid directory structure. Your mileage may vary, but if
you are going to use utilities such as Norton, Techtools, and Disk
Warrior, use only one utility. Otherwise you may end up having a
hard drive "fixed" by one utility only to make another utility view
the drive as unreadable. The end result eventually you may end up
with a totally unreadable drive without a reformat and sometimes
reinitialization. Which means you end up having to recover the
ENTIRE backup. So if you have never used a utility before, get one,
and only get the latest copy of that one if you have a current OS.
If you have an older OS find which utility worked best with it. For
instance Norton 3, and 4 really didn't like MacOS 8.1. In anycase,
backup your data before running any utility. This is vital!

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: (Q) Adding more than 192 MB Memory to Wall Street Creates Disaster

My early Wall Street (G3 Series PowerBook Revision A 250mhtz with 13" screen
and 160 MB ram) refuses to take more than 192 megs of memory without falling
over. At that time I did this I had 9.0.4 installed.

I'd tried removing the original 32 MB chip (it also has a 80 MHtz 128 MB
half-size chip underneath) and upgrading it to a fast (100 Mhtz) 128 MB
chip and it starts to crash and refuse to start up after a few trials. Pull
the chip out and the problem goes away after reinstalling the system and so
on. The problem is so severe that the hard disk develops unrepairable
issues. Duplicable over and over again. Tried increasing ram to 192 with a
64 MB chip on top instead of the 32 MB chip and it was fine. I also tried a
full size slower (80 Mhtz) 128 MB chip on top (instead of the 32MB) and
there were fewer problems than with the 128 MB faster chip. In other words,
the system seemed to start to fail more and more often but it took longer
with the slower (80 Mhtz) chip. With a 100 Mhtz chip the severe crashing
and corruption problems happened really fast. We tried the fast chip in
other Wall Streets (next revision) and Lombards and there was no problem at
all. Even tried Apple's testing CD and failed to locate problems. So it
didn't seem to be a chip problem. Returned the chip to MCE and they
couldn't find a problem with it either.

Any suggestions other than getting a newer machine? I desperately need more
memory to run what I've got! Apple says it is only rated to 192 MB - or at
least supported to that point. But the after market places insist that this
is only on paper due to no half height 128 MB chips available when the
machine first came out to test and certify it beyond 192 MB ram. Even the
Apple dealer is surprised.

ACE! allows you to edit the 'save game' documents created by many
commercial and shareware games (these documents are referred to as
'characters' by some games). Additionally, ACE! allows you to print
details of these save games.

ACE! is freeware.

ACE! will run on any Macintosh or MacOS compatible computer. It
requires a minimum of System 7.0 or higher, 850k of disc space, and
512k of free RAM (preferred 1.5 MB).

Version 1.8 adds modules for Descent 1, 2 and 3 (by Chris), Baldur's

Subject: [*] AutoCheck 2.2

Automates Apple's Disk First Aid to check all disks at once, except remote
and read-only volumes. A complete run through a typical configuration takes
less than five minutes.

The importance of something like AutoCheck, placed in the Mac's Startup
Items folder, is that most users run Disk First Aid or a similar utility
only when experiencing problems. But a lot of disk damage is incremental,
and early detection and repair can be crucial to safeguarding data. By
itself, Disk First Aid takes several steps to run. AutoCheck automates the
entire process, stopping and posting a dialog only if a disk error is
found. Otherwise, it quits Disk First Aid and itself and is out of your way
by the time you've gotten a cup of coffee, and your Mac has a clean bill of
health.

New in this version:

Nearly every parameter is user-adjustable, for maximum flexibility and
speed. If the Caps Lock key is engaged when AutoCheck starts, it quits
without checking anything (useful if you have it in your Startup Items
folder, but want a quicker startup this time). You can set the number of
times AutoCheck tries to check a busy disk, the starting interval to wait
between checks of a busy disk, and the time to pause after launching before
starting the whole check. The pause can be bypassed on any occasion with
the Shift key. Source code is commented.

I have a large fixed-frequency monitor with a suspiciously similar model number: GDM-1961. It's marked "Digital" but was actually made by Sony, who may also have made monitors for Sun.
You didn't describe the connectors that the monitor wants, but a good cable supply store should be able to suss it out. Mine had three BNC connectors (they look like little pipes with pegs on the sides), for which I used a cable costing around $20 and a Mac-to-SVGA adapter. I'm not familiar with the video output capability of the G4, but it's likely that there's a SVGA video output for it-- or that Griffin Technologies has an adapter that turns the G4's video output into a SVGA signal.
My website has more info on the operation, as well as some sources:

Subject: eudora graphics scrolling

Hello from Alaska,
Lately I have been plagued with molasses slow scrolling when any
message containing graphics is read. I cannot figure out why. I have
the problem on my Macintosh 8600 w/ G3 450 mhz card as well as my
iBook with airport card.

I don't recall having such awful blink-wait-blink-wait scrolling
before. Especially bad in the html messages many are sending now
(even Apple is doing it).

What can I do to speed it up? I tried making a new empty In box but
that didn't help. Eudora tech support didn't help either.

Um, <http://www.microsoft.com> maybe? Avoid the "DOJ vs. Innovation" link, tempting though it may sound, and instead click on "Downloads." You'll see a popup list from which you can select "Internet Explorer 5 Macintosh Edition" (or others).
Unless they're barring Netscape users from their site, or are using MSIE-specific code, again...

Subject: MacOS 9.1: Contextual Menus

Hi.

I have just installed MacOS 9.1, as an upgrade from 9.0.4. Contextual
Menus no longer work as before, except in the Finder. That is, if one
does a control-click, a popup menu no longer occurs. The only exception
is that this still works in the Finder.

Internet Addresses appear to be a special case. Previously, one
selected the text containing an Internet Address, and then did
control-mouseclick to bring up a menu of things to do with the address
(e.g., Open in Netscape Communicator, Bookmark in Netscape Communicator).

When I do this after the upgrade, nothing happens. However, if I select
an Internet Address and do command-mouseclick, then the right thing
happens. For example, if it's an http URL, Netscape Communicator opens
to that address, and if it's a mailto URL, Netscape Messenger opens to
send mail to that address.

Has anybody else experienced these problems? Is there a fix? Thanks.

Subject: MacOS 9.1: Language Kits

Hi.

I have recently upgraded from MacOS 9.0.4 to MacOS 9.1. Since I have a
reasonably fast connection, I downloaded the upgrade from Apple's website.

On my first attempt to upgrade, the Installer told me that because
Language Kits were installed, the upgrade couldn't be done. After
removing the Language Kit, I tried again. The upgrade succeeded. (I
had some other problems, but that need not concern us now.)

The question: is it safe to reinstall the Language Kit from my old MacOS
9.0 CD-ROM? I don't want to find out by experimentation.

Thanks.

Has anyone figured out how to install the OS9.1 update on a 6100/60? Apple
claims that it can only be done from the 9.1 CD. Surely someone has figured
out how to get around that, no?

TIA.

Subject: System Icon problem caused by Phaser 850DP installation

Hi everyone:

I want to thank all of you who responded to my posting about my icon
problems. I've tried the following more or less in the following order:

- rebuilding the desktop
- using Conflict Catcher to rebuild the desktop
- using Disk Warrior to rebuild the desktop
- trashing Finder Preferences and rebuilding the desktop
- reinstalling the System 9.0.4

All without success.

However, I have made the discovery that when I boot from the System 9 CD,
the computer desktop shows all the icons on the hard disk in their default
state. It is only when I revert to booting off the hard disk that the
problem appears.

OK, tomorrow I shall try Norton. Unfortunately, I don't have TechTools and I
can't find a download site for purchasing the software. Living as I do in
Ireland, it would take a week for the software to reach me from the States.

I wonder if the Tektronic people know anything. They manufacture the Phaser
850DP printer. As it happens, although it has been put on the network I
don't actually use it; I use the regular LaserWriter workhorse instead.

Keep the ideas and suggestions rolling in!
